Our Primary Closet

While we moved into a larger home, it has a much smaller primary closet. Further complicating matters, the primary bedroom is small. We really wanted to avoid buying a dresser since we don't have the space. Luckily, Inspired Closets Chicago came to the rescue and designed a primary closet that meets all our needs.

When it comes to buying a home, it is very hard to find something that checks every single box. Usually, you end up prioritizing and getting the things that are most important to you. We got a private roof deck, a ground floor entrance that is easy to manage with a stroller, a bathroom with a tub for Gwen (this was hard to find), lots of windows, a bathroom on the same level as the kitchen, and a pantry. But, we had to sacrifice closet space.

This was especially hard because the closet at our last home was HUGE. We never even bought a dresser. Everything just fit! We loved it. But... it also made hoarding clothing way too easy. We did a major closet clean out in preparation for our move to a smaller closet.

At one of the walk throughs, Charles and our contractor came up with an idea to give us a bit more closet space. Our primary bedroom closet was going to be on the other side of the wall from the reach-in closet in the next room. We already knew that room would be my office and that we wouldn't be using it as a bedroom. So, we took that reach in closet and made it part of our primary closet. With that change, our closet went from tiny to small.

The closet at our last home was massive. This was my half.

When we purchased our new townhouse, the closets were not finished, so we teamed up with Inspired Closets Chicago who did an incredible job finishing all of our closets. I sent them photos of the old closet so that they could get an idea of the type of space we wanted and how much stuff we needed to make room for. Their team came up with an initial design that we discussed over the phone and made some small adjustments to.

I wasn't sure if it would be possible to create a closet that would store all of our clothing, but I really wanted to avoid buying a dresser because our bedroom is so small.

Inspired Closets Chicago worked magic. They were able to give us a lot of space to hang clothes, plus plenty of drawer space. They maximized every inch of space. Most of our clothing is hung while things like socks, underwear, pajamas, and work out clothing goes in the drawers. We keep sweaters and pants folded on the open shelves.

Our new primary closet fits all of our clothing, but it doesn't have space for our shoes. Fortunately, we have a large storage closet on the first floor where we can store all of our shoes and my handbags. We also have a coat closet in the entryway where we can store our jackets which is so convenient.

Finishing the closets really helped turn our house into a home. One of the things that we love about our home is that everything has a designated space. Everything is very organized and easy to find. I love having most of my clothing hanging in the closet so that I can see what I have. Nothing gets forgotten or lost.
