I spent the weekend in charming sweltering Washington D.C. where I attended my third wedding of the summer (only two more weddings to go this year!). Not only did I get to attend the wedding of a close friend of 10 years, I also got to stay with friends from when I lived in New York, who just moved to D.C. My friend Virginia adorably made reservations at a restaurant called The Pig for Saturday brunch in honor of National Bacon Day. I asked her how she knew about National Bacon Day, and she said that she saw it here on the blog and figured that we needed to celebrate it. Stories like this explain why she is one of the sweetest people in the world.
The low key atmosphere of The Pig was perfect for a Saturday morning brunch. It is also easy to love a restaurant that serves mimosas by the jug. The restaurant had a rustic Southern feel, with wooden tables, and cozy booth along the walls. I loved the subway tile covered long bar at the back of the restaurant. I also really liked the contrast of the metal chairs with the wooden tables.
Apparently after six years together, Charles and I have developed the same exact brunch cravings. Either that or we both really really love eggs benedict - maybe a bit of both. We both ordered the Pulled Pork Benedict with cheddar and habanero bbq hollandaise. The benedict has a generous amount of pulled pork, which made this a really filling breakfast. The bbq hollandaise pulled this dish together and was great with the pork.
Meanwhile Virginia ordered the aggressively large BLT with homemade potato chips. This is the time of year to order a BLT since tomato season is in full force. This sandwich had a generous amount of thick bacon slices, and was a great way to celebrate #BaconDay - although shouldn't we be living every day like it is #BaconDay?
We also had sides of the face bacon and the cheese grits. My husband continued to be skeptical about grits, while I thought they were bites of cheesy perfection.
I thought that The Pig was a great pick for brunch - #NationalBaconDay or otherwise. The Southern inspired pig themed menu was fun, and the food was delicious.
The Pig is located in Washington D.C.'s Logan Circle neighborhood at 1320 14th Street NW. They do take reservations.
