Where to eat at the bar in Chicago, a guide to the 35 + best restaurants to have a meal at the bar. This extensive list includes spots with bar food specials, live music, and plenty of bar seats.

Who am I, and how did I go about making this list? I'm a proud Chicagoan who has been covering the Chicago dining scene since 2011. I know my stuff, and since I am totally independent and not pay-to-play, I am totally honest. I had a strict rule: list only spots with great food! I made sure to consult with trusted friends: people who are younger/older/single/in different neighborhoods to get some fresh points of view, too.
Step one of developing my list of where to eat at the bar in Chicago was to consider why someone would want to dine at the bar. I came up with five main reasons to eat at the bar:
- It's too hard to get a reservation
- You want a bar-only menu item
- You are dining alone
- Live music
- Happy hour specials or special menu items
All of the restaurants on my list fit at least one of these criteria. I did my best to include if they have happy hour specials, outdoor bar seating, and live music. I also made a point of including only restaurants with at least 10 seats at the bar.
Where to Eat at the Bar in Chicago
Some of these bars and restaurants accept reservations for bar seating, but they still accept some walk-ins.

Mott St
Wicker Park
Mott St is famous for its double smash cheeseburger topped with shoestring sweet potatoes; it is truly exceptional. The burger is available at the bar all night and in the dining room until 7 pm. Beyond the burger, the menu embraces Asian flavors with offerings including fire chicken and char siu pork belly.
Fioretta
West Loop
A glam Italian steakhouse that doesn't feel pretentious, Fioretta has it all: a large bar area, live music, happy hour, and the ability to make a bar reservation. Happy hour includes half-off the bar menu and takes place nightly from 5pm - 6pm. Live music takes place between 6:30pm - 9pm Monday-Thursday and between 8:30pm - 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The bar menu has classic cocktails for $12, oysters, and sliders.

Armitage Alehouse
Lincoln Park
Hogsalt's British pub is extremely popular and not very big, so securing a reservation can seem nearly impossible. The best option is to snag a bar seat at lunchtime. The full menu is available at the bar, and the wagyu double cheeseburger is one of Chicago's best.
Lobster Bar
West Loop
Located in Trivoli Tavern (another Hogsalt property) and meant to feel like an old ship's cargo hold, Lobster Bar is a walk-in-only space serving snacks, raw bar items, sushi, sake, and slushies in addition to the full Trivoli Tavern menu. Happy Hour is offered Monday through Friday from 4pm-5pm and includes sliders for $6.99, $6 table wine and draft beer, and $8 teeny martinis. In the summer, Lobster Bar offers outdoor dining, too.

Bavettes
River North
Another Hogsalt spot, Bavette's has two bars (one on each level) and I've always had good luck with getting a walk-in spot at the bar if I go shortly after they open, or late at night. If I am dining alone, I will order the decadent shortrib stroganoff instead of a steak and sides. The chocolate cream pie is one of the best desserts I have ever had, and I love stopping in at the end of the night for a glass of red and a slice of pie.
Monteverde
West Loop
The 15 or so barstools at Monteverde have backs and a prime view of pasta being made. Settle in with a glass of wine and watch the memorizing process of dough becoming dinner. An Aperitivo hour takes place Tuesday through Saturday from 2:30pm - 4:30pm and features cocktails and snacks like 'nduja arancini, wagyu beef skewers, and smoked fish 'n chips.

Dove's Luncheonette
Wicker Park
Every seat inside this Tex-Mex diner is along a bar or counter. Happy hour is offered from 3pm-6pm Thursdays through Saturdays and features discounted shots, beers, and agua frescas plus bites like el animal fries, a depression dog, and an OK-style onion burger.
Boeufhaus
West Town
Boeufhaus is a candlelit steakhouse with exposed brick that feels cozy and romantic. It's a regular on our date-night rotation. A great burger is offered at the bar only. Bar reservations are accepted, and we have made bar reservations specifically to have the burger.

Chef's Special
Bucktown
This cocktail bar/Chinese restaurant has 21 seats at the bar (yes, they have backs) and has happy hour daily from 5pm - 6pm. During happy hour, select cocktails are $11 and select beer is $6. Food specials include spring rolls, egg rolls, crab rangoon, and dan dan noodles. Can't make it for happy hour? Regular price cocktails are $12-$15, making them some of the more reasonably priced in Chicago.
Hugo's Frog Bar
Gold Coast
The quieter sister to Gibsons next door offers a burger and a beer for $22 during Happy Hour (3pm - 6pm Sundays - Thursdays). Half-priced oysters and half-priced bottles of wine are also included in happy hour. The regular menu includes Gibsons steaks, a wide selection of fresh fish, and a few salads. The long bar has lots of seats, but they do tend to fill up quickly during happy hour.

Paulie Gee's
Logan Square
Paulie Gee's has two very different Chicago locations. The Wicker Park fast casual location serves NY-style pizza by the slice or pie. It's solid and we get it for take out. The Logan Square location is superior. The thick Detroit-style pies are fantastic, and the restaurant has a laid-back bar vibe. Paulie Gee's doesn't accept reservations, which means you might end up at the bar. Luckily, the owners specifically designed the bar to have enough room for pizza.
Indienne
River North
It's rare for a fine dining restaurant to offer an à la carte menu at the bar. Indienne, a Michelin-starred contemporary Indian restaurant, serves a bar bite menu that includes pork belly bbq, octopus, and chicken gustaba.

Eden
Avondale
Eden brings new meaning to the term "farm-to-table" with its on-site greenhouse. The menu has sophisticated comfort food like sweet potato gnocchi, roasted chicken, wood-grilled octopus, and of course, a burger. The cocktail and mocktail menu is made with homemade syrups and fresh herbs.
Cafe el Tapatio
Lakeview
This restaurant has been around since the 1970s and offers a large menu of authentic Mexican staples, including fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, and tacos. The daily happy hour features $6 margaritas from 4pm-6pm.

Segnatore
Humboldt Park
Tucked away in Humboldt Park, Segnatore is a neighborhood Italian spot where pasta is the star of the show. As I keep saying, the Leek Gramigna with shortrib and a cream sauce is one of the best pasta dishes in Chicago. Aperitivo Hour is from 5pm -7pm Tuesdays - Thursdays and features rotating bites and $10 cocktails.
Chicago Firehouse
South Loop
A grand restaurant located in a former firehouse that survived a 2014 roof fire, Chicago Firehouse is a South Loop staple. The happy hour is offered Monday - Friday from 4pm - 5pm and features half off cocktails, $5 glasses of wine, and bar snacks. The bar itself is massive, with about 20 comfortable barstools with backs. The dinner menu features a large selection of American steakhouse and pub classics, including fish & chips, Dover sole, prime steaks, and hearty salads.

The Loyalist
West Loop
The Loyalist is a chic French-inspired gastropub below sister restaurant, Smyth, Chicago's only restaurant with three Michelin stars. The Loyalist is known for having one of the city's best burgers, but the menu is loaded with traditional French dishes like beer tartare, oysters, French onion soup, mussels, escargot, and quiche Lorraine. A selection of cocktails is just $11 during happy hour (Monday-Thursday from 5 p.m. to 6pm).
Gus' Sip and Dip
River North
A tavern that is walk-in only - no reservations. Find classics, including Sazerac, Dirty Martini, White Russian, Cosmo, and Gimlet, on the list of 30 cocktails priced at $12 each. The menu leans into the tavern theme with salty snacks and dipped sandwiches. Happy hour takes place Monday-Friday from 4pm-5pm.

Little Victories
Wicker Park
Little Victories has a huge wraparound bar with about two dozen barstools. In addition to seating at the bar, there are small tables for 2-4 people. It's spacious, but it tends to be very busy. Little Victories gained viral fame when Buttermilk Fry took over the kitchen and started serving up what is arguably the best Chicken Caesar Wrap in Chicago. Even nearly a year after Buttermilk Fry moved in, Little Victories is extremely busy. There is often a line out the door. Food is dine-in only. Be prepared to wait, or be in line right before they open.
Lula Cafe
Logan Square
This Logan Square gem serves three meals a day, has friendly vibes, and is great for solo diners. The creative menu is centered around seasonality. Try a traditional French omelet for breakfast, a gourmet turkey sandwich for lunch, or a wagyu sirloin for dinner.

Nic + Junior's
River North
This Brazilian/Italian restaurant, which opened in 2025 and was just named a semi-finalist for the James Beard award for Best New Restaurant, has one of Chicago's best happy hours. A selection of cocktails, including an old-fashioned, espresso martinis, negronis, and martinis, is $8. A selection of draft beers are $5. But, it is the food specials that cement Nic + Junior's on my list of Where to Eat at the Bar in Chicago. Get a dozen oysters for $24, the cheeseburger for $15, or the rigatoni vodka for $20.
Bar Sótano
River North
This mezcal bar, located beneath Frontera Grill, has just 50 seats, but 15 of them are at the bar. A happy hour with a snack menu and drink specials is offered from 5pm-6pm every day, and all day on Wednesdays. The dinner menu has a great mix of options including oysters, ceviche, a burger, carne asada frites, and a Mexican paella. The kitchen is open later than most - until 10pm Wednesdays and Thursdays and until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays - so keep this in mind for late-night dining.

Parlor Pizza
Wicker Park/West Loop/River North
Parlors have very different vibes. The Wicker Park location is quieter and family-friendly. The West Loop and River North locations have a younger, more lively crowd. I had to include Parlor on this list where to eat at the bar in Chicago since they have a great weekday happy hour. From 4pm - 6pm specials include draft beer for $7, cocktails for $8, apps for $7, plus some buy-one-get-one pizzas. The bar itself is huge with plenty of seats, and there is always a game on.
Bar Tre Dita
Lakeshore East
A swanky restaurant located in the St. Regis, Tre Dita's bar is known for being a singles hangout. The bar space has lounge tables that can be reserved in addition to a dozen seats at the bar itself. The menu is the same at the main restaurant and emphasizes Tuscan cuisine and freshly made pastas. Tre Dita's atmopshere is more formal and the prices are higher than other spots on this list.

Spilt Milk
Logan Square
Spilt Milk's happy hour features rotating drink specials from 4pm to 7pm. This bar gets a spot on my list of where to eat at the bar in Chicago thanks to its well-curated menu with three different burgers, a Korean fried chicken sandwich, and shareable sides. Both the bar and the tables are walk-in only.
Club Lago
River North
This Northern Italian restaurant opened in 1952 and serves lunch and dinner daily. The large menu features all of the Italian-American red-sauce classics like spaghetti and meatballs, baked mostaccioli, and chicken parmigiana (which is experiencing a renaissance). Plus, steaks, veal, subs, and scampi Italiano, Club Lago has it all.

Parson's Chicken & Fish
Logan Square
Parson's chicken nuggets and French fries are my favorite girl dinner when my husband is traveling. While I usually enjoy Parson's via Uber Eats, the Logan Square restaurant is always a great time. The large outdoor bar has the vibe of hanging out in a neighbor's backyard - sip a negroni slushie have some fried chicken (or their burger) and make some new friends.
Diego
West Town
Diego, a welcoming Mexican restaurant and neighborhood hangout, has two large bars, one inside and one outside. Happy hour is offered Tuesday - Friday from 4pm-6pm and includes tacos and drink specials.

The Dawson
River West
The Dawson has a total of three bars: one outside that is open seasonally, plus two inside. A happy hour menu is available Tuesdays - Fridays from 4pm - 6pm and features $6 beers, $10 wine and cocktails, and a few snacks.
Elina's
West Town
Elina's takes reservations for the bar, so walk-in seats may not be available. The effort of making a reservation will be rewarded with a top-tier chicken parm. This is a great place for a date.

Bar Siena
West Loop
Bar Siena combines from-scratch Italian food with a lively bar atmosphere. A large bar with televisions is at the center of the West Loop space. Happy hour takes place from Monday to Friday from 3:30pm - 5:30pm. Lunch is available on weekdays, brunch is served on weekends, and a late-night menu is served on Friday and Saturday from 11 pm until close.
Hopleaf
Andersonville
Hopleaf, one of Chicago's best bars, opens at noon every day, making it one of the few bars offering lunch. The Belgian-inspired menu has PEI Mussels cooked in beer or wine, pork schnitzel, a sausage plate, and trout. The extensive 20-page beverage menu has many Belgian-style beers plus American craft beers, ciders, and gluten-free beers.

Osteria Langhe
Logan Square
This Italian restaurant, centered around the cuisine from the Piedmont region, is the perfect place to enjoy a bowl of pasta and a glass of wine. The plin, fresh pasta filled with creamy la tur cheese and topped with butter and thyme, is a delight.
Il Milanese
Ravenswood/North Center
Il Milanese, just a stone's throw from Lincoln Square, serves authentic Northern Italian dishes such as bucatini carbonara, risotto with porcini mushrooms, and veal scaloppine. A long bar has over a dozen leather barstools with backs, where diners can settle in with a $14 cocktail or a $12 glass of wine.

Coda di Volpe
Lakeview
Coda di Volpe is a fun Italian restaurant with a neighborhood vibe, and a large wrap-around bar with well over a dozen leather barstools (with backs). The menu focuses on pizzas and housemade pasta.
Cerdito Muerto
Pilsen
About a dozen barstools and a great burger are waiting for you at this Mexican cocktail spot. Also on the menu? Nachos, flautas, and tacos. While there is a Mexican beer selection, the magic is in the cocktails which are made from scratch with juiced fruits and vegetables. Cerdito Muerto opened in May 2025, but the building dates back to 1853 and survived the Chicago Fire.

void
Avondale
If you are a solo diner wondering where to eat at the bar in Chicago, try Void! The friendly staff would surely keep you company. I love the creative menu, which includes gourmet Spaghetti-O's (they call them Spaghetti Uh-O's) and sweet potato agnolotti.
Frasca
Lakeview
A pizzeria and wine bar serving up wood-fired pizzas, several pastas, and meat entrees. Frasca is the type of restaurant that fits any situation: dining alone, meeting a friend for a drink, dining with children (at a table and not the bar). It has a warm atmosphere and solid food.

The Perch
Wicker Park
A sibling restaurant to Frasca, The Perch is one of our neighborhood go-tos. The menu focuses on American comfort food like rotisserie chicken, prime rib, and baby back ribs. My husband loves the Wrightwood Salad (also available at Frasca) since it is loaded with chicken, goat cheese, and cornbread croutons. It seems like we always run into friends at Perch - it's kid-friendly, dog-friendly, open all day, and a Wicker Park staple.
