The Chocolate Cake Shake is a classic Chicago food, and today I am sharing my easy to make my version.
A chocolate cake shake is a milkshake made with an extra special ingredient: chocolate cake! It manages to maintain the tastes of both the milkshake and the cake. It’s smoother than you might expect, all that blended up cake practically melts into a milkshake. Every once in while you might get a little chunk of cake or a bit of frosting – and it’s an extra treat.
Portillo’s is an iconic Chicago restaurant and the inventor of the cake shake. While they are most well known for their hot dogs, I prefer Portillo’s Chocolate Cake Shake. It’s a vanilla milkshake with a slice of chocolate cake mixed up in it. It’s over the top and delicious. It’s one of Chicago’s culinary contributions, alongside deep dish pizza and hot dogs with fluorescent green relish.
I was inspired to make this decadent milkshake because I had leftover chocolate cake. I realize that this isn’t a common problem, but when you live in a two-person household, and you make a cake, you end up with leftover cake. There are worse problems. I happened to have a pint of my favorite vanilla ice cream in the fridge, so clearly, I needed to make a chocolate cake shake. It was a special mid-day treat!
If you don’t happen to have leftover cake at home, you could simply buy a cupcake. Then add it to the blender add frosting and all. You might be skeptical of frosting in a milkshake, but I promise it makes it even better.
While Portillo’s uses chocolate cake with chocolate frosting to make their shake, I used my chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. The peanut butter frosting adds a whole new layer of flavor.
