Big Plans for Our Back Balcony

After sitting empty for over four years, the balcony off our kitchen is getting a big makeover. Here is our plan.

You might be wondering why we haven't decorated our balcony. Our current home is about twice the size of our last home, and we have been very busy decorating and have spent a small fortune on new furniture. The balcony is the smaller of our two outdoor spaces. We also have a large rooftop, which we decorated immediately and is the center of our summertime entertaining.

The other reason we haven't decorated our balcony is that power lines are dangerously close. We didn't want to put furniture out on the balcony until we found a way to make the space a bit safer. Finally, we have a plan.

Shop products on Wayfair: Planter, Interlocking Deck Tiles and Trim, Sectional and Chaise, Trellis, Rug, Lights

Three tall composite wood trellises will be used to divide the balcony and the nearby power lines. Tall planters will be positioned in front of the trellises, and with some luck, they will become covered in plants. I am going to cover the metal flooring with weatherproof composite wood tiles - my neighbor has had great success with this product. Not only will the faux teak look nicer, but it won't get as hot as the metal. A chic black and white rug and twinkle lights will help dress up the space.

I found a beautiful modular sectional sofa and purchased extra pieces so we can have an L-shaped sectional in one corner and a chaise in another.

The end goal is to turn this uninviting space into a cozy spot for a glass of wine while dinner is cooking. Our rooftop will still be our primary outdoor hangout since it is much larger and has the perks of more seating and a great projector set up for movie nights, but this will be a nice bonus space!

This is what the space currently looks like:

There is so much room for improvement! Once the weather warms up a little, I will get to work! Right now, there are a lot of boxes waiting in my garage.

I hope to share the final product in a few weeks!
