The Kennebunkport Guide

I happen to be from one of the most charming and perfect seaside New England villages: Kennebunkport, Maine. The air smells of salt and at night it is so quiet that you can hear the roar of the ocean from a quarter mile away. The night sky is so dark that the stars seem close enough to reach out and grab. The river is lined with lobster boats, and locals can tell if the tide is coming in or going out based on their direction in the water. The pace of life is slower there. So slow in fact, that I had to get out and move to a city. I do adore my trips to Maine, and my city dwelling husband is quite smitten with Kennebunkport.

Kennebunkport is the perfect place for a fall vacation. The leaves explode into a rainbow of colors unlike anything you will see in other parts of the world. Or, if you prefer to spend your time on the beach, plan a vacation for the summer. If you love Christmas, check out Christmas Prelude – the most adorable small town Christmas festival you could ever experience. It is even cuter than Wooville. Seriously.

Kennebunkport is just about 90 miles north of Boston, and you can take the Downeaster train from Boston to Maine for the low price of $18. I often take combo trips where I split my time between Boston and Kennebunkport. Obviously I am quite biased since I am a former local, but I think you should consider vacationing in Maine.

Where to Stay:

The Colony Hotel – This classic grand New England hotel was a huge hit with my friends who stayed there while in town for my wedding. It has a spectacular salt water pool that overlooks the ocean.

The Breakwater Inn – If you want to splurge, the Breakwater has the sweetest little riverside cottage. My husband and I stayed there the weekend we got married.

The White Barn Inn – This is the nicest hotel in town and it has the most highly rated restaurant in the state.

Where to Eat:

Hurricane – My personal favorite, and a local hangout in the off season.

David’s – Located right on the river, this offers some of the best views in town.

Nunan’s Lobster Hut – The decor is bare bones, but the lobster is fresh off the boat and cheap!

The Clam Shack – The weekend of my wedding, my friends decided to try every lobster roll in town and see who could eat the most. The Clam Shack was the crowd favorite.

Where to have Happy Hour:
The Arundel Wharf – My Dad and I may have gotten in trouble with my Mom for heading here as early at 2pm. But, who can blame us? The large patio setting area over the river filled with adirondack chairs is irresistible.

Alisson’s – A local hangout and fun place to watch a Red Sox Game.

Tia’s Topside – I love the classic nautical decor of Tia’s and they have fun outdoor space.

What to Do:
Kayak – Many hotels offer free kayak rentals. Kayaking up the river is very scenic and perfect for beginners.

Beach – Kennebunkport’s Colony Beach is my favorite.

Whale Watch – I am terrified of whales and I never done this. But, if you enjoy seeking out mammals large enough to swallow you whole, go for it.

Lobster Tour – The guides teach you how lobstermen pull up traps and catch lobster.

Fishing Tour – Spend a day fishing with a local guide.

Sailing – My friends and I rented out The Eleanor for an afternoon before my wedding and it was the perfect way to relax.

Shopping – Kennebunkport is filled with darling little boutiques. My favorite is Shoot The Moon.
