Spooky Dirt Cake

Sharing is caring!

IMG_9498

I wanted to share an easy and spooky Halloween treat with you, and after much internal debate, I decided to make a spooky dirt cake with bones, worms, and graves. The great thing about this recipe is that it is made with store-bought mixes – it’s a no fail recipe, and a fun dessert for kids to help with. The “dirt” is made from crumbled up brownies, chocolate pudding, and graham cracker crumbs. The “bones” are yogurt covered pretzels, the “worms” are gummy worms, and the “graves” are milano cookies. You can make this dirt cake in one pan, like I did, or you can use small clear cups to prepare individual servings – this would be perfect for a Halloween party.

I made this spooky dirt cake one night when my friend Maya was visiting. I wasn’t planning to make dirt cake with Maya, but when she saw all the ingredients on the counter she asked what I was making and she excitedly announced that dirt cake is her favorite. So we added dirt cake preparation to our busy itinerary of eating dinner, drinking wine, and watching The Mindy Project. When Charles arrived at home we told him that we were making dirt cake, and he was confused. Apparently dirt cake is an American creation. Once he realized that gummy worms were involved, he got excited.

If you want to take some shortcuts with this recipe you can buy brownies from the bakery at the grocery store, and you could buy pudding cups instead of pudding mix.

Ingredients

  • 1 box Fudge Brownie Mix (plus the eggs and oil it calls for)
  • 1 box Chocolate Pudding Mix (plus the milk it calls for)
  • 1/4 Graham Cracker Crumbs (you can purchase these in the baking aisle)
  • Gummy Worms
  • Yogurt or White Chocolate Covered Pretzels
  • Milanos (any variety)
  • a few chocolate chips
  • a touch of Milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pudding first since it needs time to cool. Follow the directions on the box to prepare. I poured the pudding into a big pie pan which helped the pudding set more quickly. I know that the directions on the box of pudding say that you need to let it chill for 3-4 hours, but it was set up enough after an hour to assemble the dirt cake.
  2. Then make the brownies, following the directions on the box. Let the brownies cool, and then use a fork to crumble the brownies.
  3. Next prepare the "graves". I heated 3 tablespoons of Milk, and added about 10 chocolate chips. Whisk until the chocolate melts. Then use a toothpick to write RIP on a milano cookie.
  4. Then assemble the dirt cake. Layer brownie crumbs, pudding, and more brownie crumbs, and then sprinkle some graham cracker crumbs over. Then add the graves, and the gummy worms. Break up the pretzels and then arrange them so they look like a skeleton in the dirt. Refrigerate until serving. This can be made a day ahead.

Fun! I love the idea of doing this in individual cups for a Halloween Party!
